I give you - my ruddiest blush, my guiltiest pleasure. This dates back, too, this particular g.p. To around eighth grade, or freshman year of high school. You know -- nineteenmumblemumblesomethin'. Nahhh. I kid. You all know I haven't got age shame. (Hair shame, yes. But that is another post. One I already wrote. So.) It was 1987, or something prehistoric like that. (And in order to save your drunken asses from having to dredge up your calculators, or more horrific still, do the math, IN YOUR HEADS, that makes me thirty-three. Yeah. Bitches. I said it. But if you've got somethin' to say, just remember, my arms are like tough spaghetti after carrying around a small truck, I mean, a twenty-three pound kid, for many months. And I can take you. All of you. At once. If I wanted to, that is, which I don't. I don't believe in violence. Lucky for you.)
But allow me to set the stage. What do we have, here? Oh! A piano. With a book of music perched ever so elegantly on its rack. (Heh. I said rack.) Hummm. Chopin. How very cosmopolitan.
But -- what's that, I see? A slight hint of something hid so carefully behind the book of elegant nocturnes? Something with a pale pink edge? Whatever could it be?
Oh. It's a copy of the music for the title piece written for the Anne of Green Gables made-for-tv-movie series.
And they were beginning to believe she was so verrrry sophisticated.
Huh.
And I love. LOVE. to play it. I love it like I love cake.
Cake, people. CAKE.

WTF? You play the piano? So do I! I mean, I'm not that good, but I can play a tune or two. And I have that SAME book of Chopin Nocturnes. But no Anne of Green Gables. You know what you must do now that you've told us this don't you? You must audio record yourself playing it so we can all hear the score.
P.S. I now have a list of like 7 things we have in common. If only I knew how to embroider, I would swear we were separated at birth.

P.S. Is that a copy of the John Stewart book on your piano? Cuz if so, we WERE separated at birth.

You play the PIANO??? Dude, can you get any cooler?? Everytime I come here I get all infatuated with you.
Posted by: Catherine | August 03, 2006 at 11:16 PM
I can't say shit about your age because I'm a good 2 years older than you. But you know what? I think the 30's pretty much rock. Knowing who you are trumps perky boobies any day.
Anyhoodle...
You play the piano? Tell me now, what can't you do?! You are my hero:)
I used to watch Anne of Green Gables on PBS with my Grandma. It was strangely addictive.

I am in awe, the piano, now I know, you are super human. Why can't you not be perfect? You are setting a baaaaad standard for the rest of us to live up to. LOL But, this is also why I "HAIL" to you!! And come on, 33? old? I am turning 33 this month. I am NOT old, so don't you dare even imply that you are!

Hagood Hardy ROCKS! I can hear the melody now... I so need to get my piano tuned (one of those tasks I've been procrastinating on for, um, three years).
I'm trying to figure out if I have an Anne post in me - I tried to write one and it turned into something completely different, so we'll see.

I love AGG -- and Chopin too. Good choices.

I love cake.

"Rack."...Made me giggle... :)
So, you write with grace, embroide, AND play the piano? You are one talented lady!
Posted by: Pattie | August 04, 2006 at 06:36 AM
You play PIANO!?! And MOtR plays the PIANO!?! SO DO I!!! Just when I thought I couldn't have ANY MORE in common with you both.
I LOVE Chopin. Hell, I love the piano, period. Never played AGG though, but the Love Theme from Terms of Endearment? STILL have that song memorized from when I learned it back in 1986.

I love your writing. Just fantastic. Constant quiet smiles for me.

also mighty impressed that you can play the piano (oh, and take us all *out* with those mighty arms;-).
i am musically challenged, though can still play by ear on a recorder. and when i say "play by ear"--I mean torture the shit out of anyone who will listen to Annie's Song.

I wish I could say I was 33. I remember it fondly. And now...I'm going in search of something strong to drink. But what you say is true...about the feshest post and all. Very true. *hic*

Anne of Green Gables = Best Book/Movie/Theme Song Ever.
Period.
The End.
Oh, and holy shit? You play the piano!
Man.

I honestly can't recall the music from AGG but I adore the movies...all of them. Do you like them?
And Jiminy Crickets (I just learned that a long time ago, that was considered profane. PROFANE, I say!) you play the dang piano on top of being a master embroiderer AND a fantabulous writer.
*sigh* I guess I will have to be happy with basking in your glow and admiring you intensely from across the country.

Can I just say how jealous I am that you have a piano in your home? That will be our first luxury purchase - actually, necessity disguised as luxury.
I loved playing those pop sheet music pieces. Such fun. Those and show tunes.
Posted by: mothergoosemouse | August 04, 2006 at 03:36 PM
I still sometimes take out my old music and play. I'm rustier than I was then though!
Posted by: shpprgrl | August 04, 2006 at 07:43 PM
You play THE PIANO???!!?? I don't play the piano??!!!??? (I kept writing paino paino paino and more paino...) But I do think you're a big dork for playing AGG! And I'm A BIG DORK TOO!!!!!! Because I like to play scales on my guitar. I can't play any songs or even any chords. Just scales. Actually one scale.
And I'm 33 for a couple more weeks...
Posted by: Mignon | August 04, 2006 at 09:01 PM
So, now I love you more. Damn.
Would it be weird of me to say that I desperately want you to be my friend? And, like, come to my house after school and play music (you hit keys, I'll sing) and then sit down in my room and write stuff and talk?

My piano lessons were cut short due to major family strife, and so now I only remember the last song I was learning (which was some simplistic tune called "a walk in the park" or something similar) - to this day when I have access to a piano, I torture everyone around me by playing that. I think they'd prefer Anne of Green Gables, actually!!
Posted by: Kristen | August 05, 2006 at 11:00 AM
I'm so, so jealous. I've always wanted to learn the piano. I can tap out "My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean" on my grandmothers kawasaki organ but that's it.
However, I do have the exact same video camera and the Dali book so it's nice to know we're still slightly on the same track.

well, i am 36 and i love cake too! stopped playing piano in the 6th grade...

Okay, lildb--it's ON!! When I get back to Japanland and my own lovely piano next week, I'll be all set to photograph several choice 80s popular pieces in my collection--then I'll include the photos in my blog and link back to you. Fun!

I am Also 36. I feel we should form a biker gang of mothers in their 30's and go fuck up those haters.
I also love cake. Coconut cake.
Posted by: Dawn | August 06, 2006 at 11:04 AM
You play piano, like Anne and CAKE?!? And we are days apart in age ... I think I am smitten :) Oh and you said "rack"...he he
Posted by: Sunshine Scribe | August 06, 2006 at 12:30 PM
Hmph. The next time you want to bitch about being 33, I'm going to knock you unconscious by farting in your general direction, stick your head in the nearest terlet and give you a swirly.
You can't beat the strength and fury of a fellow woman who is kicking against the doors of actually turning 40. ;-)
Posted by: Attila the Mom | August 07, 2006 at 11:06 PM
And Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart on your piano. Why?? This is my first read of your blog...I teach World Literature, hence my uncanny ability to know THAT book from afar.

Loved this blog. Copying it to send to a friend who's turning 33 along w/ me this year. I love that you have no age shame! HA! You go sista!
