Please don't misunderstand me. I don't believe that the Democrats have magical fixing powers, nor do I assume blindly that they are the good guys, while the Republicans are the bad guys. No. I simply believe in the check-and-balance aspect of our Constitution, and in the idea that all politicians are potentially corruptable, since they're human, which is what the founders believed too, hence the establishment of a system with checks and balances built in (and who doesn't love built-ins?).
The only way to check the awesomely horrible power overreach of the current executive branch is to have a congressional majority of the opposing party. That's the point of the separation of powers. To prevent overreaching in any particular branch. It's why our government is currently in such a crap mess, because we've been living with one-party rule for four years. So, no checks (well, not counting the billions, er, trillions of dollars they've written in blank checks for things like wars we needed to be involved in like we needed a hole in the - uh, never mind). No balance. Just corrupt, bloated power.
And it's got to be stopped.
Please, please, please let it be stopped. Curbed. Halted. Paused.
Disemboweled.

I have no problem saying I think the current Republicans are the Bad Guys. I like making sweeping generalizations in other people's comments sections. But then, I tend to wear my politics (and all of my private personal details) on my sleeve...

I agree. I voted for one Republican today.
However, I agree. Nobody in the political spectrum can be recognized by the color of their hats. But this country I look at now as described in the newspaper and shown on television, isn't my country. The people who allow torture, unilateral military actions, the trampling of constitutional protections, and political appointments to positions that should have had professionals are not MY people.

There is hope in America again!!! It's true - You can open your eyes and look. No more business as usual!
I'm ecstatic because Democratic control of Congress is the only way to stop the corruption of the Bush Administration. Yes, there are plenty of corrupt Democrats, I think you have to be somewhat corrupt to get elected to be honest, but the Repugs have pushed the envelope too far and it was time for a change.
I am absolutely giddy this morning and I make no apologies for it. Let's hope the Dems can keep this momentum going for the next two years and we see BIG change in the White House in 2008!

I agree with Nancy - I think there is a scale of corruptness to politics and we choose what levels we can live with. But I am happy with these results and PRAY the Dems come up with some good candidates for 2008. They can't win the White House on "anyone but the R's". Theoretically, they should be able to, but it just doesn't work.

Yes for balance. And while I don't know if I am allowed to comment as a Canuck. Your friends to the north have been watching all this with great interest wishing for some change and balance for our next door neighbours.
I have been hiding under a rock for a few weeks ... off to get caught up on all your posts.

I just hope the Dems don't blow it. I'm blue through and through, and am hoping they are able to do their part on the checks-and-balances aspect of our government and not be timid as they have been in the last six year. Oh, and they need to learn to play the Karl Rove game, too.
